On one occasion in India I had the opportunity to talk with a couple of Mexicans who were traveling around the country and had paid for their trip with an all-inclusive tour, with flights from Mexico, for 10 days at 50,000 MXN (3,846USD) per person .
I was impressed, it is $ 100,000 MXN (7,692USD) for 2 people in a trip of just 10 days, it was ridiculous. But hey, I understand that some people have the possibility of making this type of expenses and prefer to do it because they avoid the issue of organization, logistics, transfers, etc., also each person and each trip is different, and I do not intend to judge the style traveling of people, because at the end of the day the only thing that matters is traveling.
But if you want to take a trip to India and you have a limited budget, you do not have to discard it from your list of places to visit, because it is a really accessible trip and here I show you how much it costs to travel to India.
Before continuing, I will clarify some important points so that you understand how the total expenses are made up.
These expenses do NOT include the Mexico-India-Mexico transfer flight or the country you want, I traveled from China so it was cheaper. So if you are making a budget for your trip, I recommend that you find the airline tickets on your own and then include this total in the expenses.
- The whole trip was organized on my own. Never use a travel agency or help from someone outside. I booked hotels , bought airline and train tickets, searched for places to eat, and selected attractions to go to. This helped me to make a trip more relaxed and to my liking.
- Avoid moving around too much. I was trying to spend more days in one place and not want to see the whole country, I suggest you do the same. I spent 15 days in Mumbai, 10 days in Goa, 15 days in Delhi, these cities maybe you can see them touristically in 3 days, but the truth is that if you travel slowly you will enjoy more the places and also spend less. The expenses increase considerably when you are moving from one place to another.
- This trip is made up of 2 parts. The first 19 days I spent traveling with my mom and the last 58 traveling alone, this is important since they are 2 TOTALLY different travel styles. I will give you the total cost and I will divide it accordingly so that you understand a little the panorama and you can choose more appropriately the information that fits your travel style so that you can organize yours.
How much do hotels cost in India?
I always stayed in private rooms, even in hostels I asked for a room for myself. This is a little more expensive but I prefer it. Many hostels have very good single rooms and still retain the youthful vibe of being a hostel, so it’s a great option. When there were no hostels available then I opted for mid-range or executive hotels, they are cheap hotels without luxuries and that fulfill their function, when I traveled with my mother these hotels were a little more luxurious, with more amenities and in better areas.
